Tips for choosing a personal loan

by Money Mumbo Jumbo on June 14, 2010

The Internet is the best place to look for various offers on personal loans. More and more people are now looking for loans online instead of responding to radio and TV adverts. Using the Internet to search for loans allows you to do quick and easy comparisons so it’s a lot easier to find a great deal.

Be careful with using your credit card to withdraw cash. The interest rates are quite high compared to most loans from banks. Also, if the amount is not paid back quickly, the interest tends to snowball and you can quickly lose control. You can then get hit with late payment fees and over limit fees, thus increasing your debt even further. So in many instances, it may be better to take out a personal loan than use a credit card if you need a significant cash sum.

Many loan providers offer payment protection insurance to protect you in case you find yourself unable to work and you are committed to paying off your loan. Beware that this can be a costly form of insurance since in many cases the premium is added to the loan from the outset and you end up paying interest on top of the actual cost of the policy. Think about whether you actually need this type of insurance and whether it is suitable for you. If your employer already provides you with sickness benefits it may not be necessary to take it out. If you do opt to protect your loan repayments, shop around for the best option and don’t just accept a quote from the same company who sells you the loan as you could save considerably more by shopping around.

It all boils down to being diligent with your research. But before you do this, draw up a budget to make sure that you can afford the monthly repayments. The shorter the term of the loan, the less it will end up costing you, but the monthly repayments will be higher as a result and it is sensible to allow yourself some leeway in your budget so that you don’t get behind with your repayments.
